Trip-Report - The Hummer House
Posted on Tuesday, May 14 @ 19:53:52 CDT by webmaster

Birds, Bats, Bugs and More... batman writes "The Hummer House is located in Christoval about 15 miles south of San Angelo in west Texas.

Wow, I have never seen so many humming birds at once. The Hummer House is located near the natural breeding area of the Black-chinned hummingbird.

Dan and Joann Brown, owners of the Hummer House, have created a wonderful viewing area for bird lovers to watch these tiny hummers feed just a few feet away. There is a large viewing room with air-conditioning and large windows for viewing the hummingbirds while feeding and gathering nesting material.

There are 18 hummingbird feeders on the houses and guest house with 5 of them hanging on the eve of the observation room just five feet away.

It was fascinating to watch the female hummingbirds collect cotton to build their nest.

Hummingbirds are not the only wildlife you will see. We saw cardinals, wrens, titmouse, and about 30 wild turkey feeding a few hundred yards away. You will likely see white-tailed deer on your visit as well.

The first hummingbirds arrive around March 15th with the highest concentration between April 15th and August 15th. The Hummer House is open year-around, but you need to call ahead to make an appointment.

The town of Christoval is very small. There are no eating establishments on the main street, but there is a small road side cafe called Country Junction Cafe just south of the 110 loop that serves up a good burger with friendly service. Just the kind of place I like to stop on a road trip through the small towns of Texas. Along main street just down from the post office is a bakery, stop in and pick-up some homemade cookies:).

There is a nice park along the Concho river off of RR2084 just across the road from the local school between Christoval and the Hummer House. It has great swing ropes for the kids to launch themselves into the river and camping."
