We have two bird feeders suspended from our balconies on long poles. These we can easily view from our livingroom windows.
To attract a greater variety of birds, and to have multiple types of birds feeding at the same time, you must appeal to how they eat in the wild.
Not all birds will come to a feeder, while others that will, are easily frightened away by larger or more agressive species, (I speak here of the common starling).
So you must plan for this. Spread some seed around along the top of your doorsteap bannisters and rails. This will attract ground feeders like doves and Juncos. Pigeons do not like coming too close to narrow balconies so feed them right in the driveway gravel. But be prepared for higher costs as they eat more than any other ground feeder per size of bird.
Smaller birds like finches and song sparrows prefer a good finch seed with pleanty of black niger seed. If the seed is in several places, they will simply fly to the other place when threatened but continue to get a chanch to feed.
In colder climates, such as Nova Scotia, these feeding times are critical. Have the seed in the feeders ready for early morning hours only 30 to 50 minutes after early dawn. They will return again in late noon about 2 hours before sunset.
This is the best time to have your cats indoors! Remember, once you have established a winter feeding area, do not abandon the birds. They develope these survival areas in late fall and cannot find new ones after snow fall, without risk.
Tonight we are getting about 20 to 30centemeters of snow(8 to 12 inches ). Tommorows feeding will be critical!
Cheers and happy backyard birding!
